If you’ve shopped for specialty green coffee, you’ve seen scores like “Q 89” or “SCA 86+” attached to a lot. These numbers aren’t marketing — they come from a rigorous, standardized evaluation system, and understanding it will make you a sharper buyer.

The SCA 100-Point Scale

Developed by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), the cupping protocol scores coffee across ten categories: fragrance/aroma, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, body, balance, uniformity, clean cup, sweetness, and overall impression. Each is scored on a scale, and the totals are combined into a final number out of 100. A score of 80 or above qualifies a coffee as “specialty grade.” Below that threshold, a coffee is considered commercial or standard grade.

Who Is a Q Grader?

A Q Grader is a cupper certified by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) after passing a demanding series of sensory exams — including triangulation tests, defect identification, and blind cupping calibration against a panel of peers. Q Grader certification must be renewed periodically, ensuring evaluators stay calibrated to a consistent sensory standard across the industry.

Reading a Q Score in Practice

  • 80–83: Solid specialty grade, clean cup, good for consistent commercial blends.
  • 84–86: Very good specialty grade with distinct character — most of our Brazil, El Salvador, and Indonesia lots fall in this range.
  • 87–89: Excellent, layered cups with standout attributes — our Colombia Huila Pink Bourbon scores 89.
  • 90+: Exceptional, rare lots with outstanding complexity — our Yemen Haraz Peaberry scores 91.

Beyond the Number

A Q score tells you the coffee passed a rigorous, repeatable evaluation — but it doesn’t replace your own palate. Always request a physical pre-shipment sample and cup it yourself before committing to volume. At Aureus, every lot we export includes the original cupping form alongside moisture, density, and water activity data, so you can verify our Q Grader’s findings against your own roast and cup.
